Another St. Patrick's Day gift from cousin Pat Castor. Thank you Pat!
John Moonan enlisted as a U.S. Marine and served on the USS Galena from March 12, 1886 to April 1887.
###
'Galena returned to New York City on 23 May 1886 to join the North Atlantic Squadron in battle practice along the New England coast. She then sailed to the Newfoundland fishing banks and back. She departed Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on 15 December 15, 1886 to cruise among ports in the West Indies and off Colombia until 18 April 1887.'
Brigid: now we need to find more on John Moonan's time on the USS Galena - what stories there must be somewhere.
ReplyDeleteThis part of his life is not referenced in any bios I have seen. I had no oral history of this. I wonder if we could find political advertising (such as it was) for his runs as Mayor and County Attorney that may include this reference. Looks like a lot of interesting places to visit by sea.
