Death of an Old Settler
Mr. Patrick Moonan died at his home in this city on Tuesday, November 21, 1899, after a short illness with pneumonia. He was surrounded during his last moments by his wife, his daughters, Mrs. E.J. Twomey, of Minneapolis, James of St. Paul, and John, our present county attorney, also his brothers Andrew of Austin, and Thomas of Janesville.
Mr. Moonan was born in Drogheda, Ireland, June 29, 1821, and came to this country in 1849. In 1856 he settled on a farm in Iosco, where he resided until 1871, when he removed to Janesville. November 22,1882, he came to Waukesha and built what is now known as the Waverly Hotel, which he conducted for several years, then sold to W.G. Ward and removed to Minneapolis where he resided until about 3 years ago when he returned to this city.
Mr. Moonan was well known in this county and had a large circle of friends who held him in high esteem.
The funeral took place form the Catholic church in this city Friday morning, the Rev. Fr. Treanor officiating. The remains were laid to rest in St. Mary’s cemetery, which was in accordance with the wish of the deceased.

THE EARLY SETTLERS ARE PASSING AWAY QUICKLY
Mr. Patrick Moonan joins the “Silent Majority.”
On Tuesday last Mr. Patrick Moonan the widely known old settler and father of Attorney John Moonan of this place passed away after a brief illness.
Mr. Moonan’s age was 78 years and he was well preserved having enjoyed excellent health up to within a few days of his death.
He was born in Drogheda, Ireland in 1821 and at the age of 28 came to this country, remaining in the east until 1856 he came to this country settling on a farm in Iosco Township. Where he resided up to 1871. When he removed to Janesville (MN) village where he engaged in hotel keeping making an excellent and obliging landlord.
In 1882 he removed to Waseca (MN) erecting to now called Waverly Hotel, then called the Sheridan House which he conducted successfully several years up to the time he removed to Minneapolis where he resided until two years ago when he returned to Waseca.
Mr.Moonan was a genial man and a good citizen well-liked by those who knew him most intimately, a kind husband, and a good parent. He leaves a widow and several children to survive him who will miss him as will his early friends, his absence from the county for several years causing the younger public to have grown less familiar with him.
The burial service was held Friday from the Catholic church. (missing text – looks like Rev. Fr. Treanor… burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery where his early acquaintances have preceded him). Dust to Dust.
