WIlliam Fitzgerald - Service in WWI

This photo was taken during Grandfather Billy's service during World War 1.

1914-1918. 'The war to end all wars'. WWI in Europe kills nine million soldiers and wounds 21 million.

4-6-1917. The United States declares war on Germany.

6-29-1917 Billy enlists in the U.S. Army, aged 29 and 11 months.

12-9-1917 Kathleen and Billy become engaged.

12-14-1917 Billy enters active military service. Army serial number 804 699.

1918 . Billy arrives at Le Havre, France to deploy base hospital #26 (called by many 'the Mayo Unit')

May 1919. Billy returns home.

9-11-1919. Kathleen and Billy are married. William aged 32. Kathleen aged 26.
